Tesla launches its first-ever high electric pick-up truck

At a launch event on Thursday, Tesla Chief executive Elon Musk said the truck which looked like a futuristic armoured vehicle, will have a starting price of $39,990 and a maximum range of 500 plus miles.

Mr. Musk said that “We need a sustainable energy now. If we don’t have pickup truck we can’t solve it. The top three selling vehicle in America are pickup trucks. To solve sustainable energy, we have to have a pickup truck.” He earlier tweeted that the design was partly influenced by the Lotus Esprit sportscar that doubled as submarine in the 1970s sports 007 film The spy who loved me

This truck marks the first attempt by tesla whose Model 3 Sedan is the world’s top-selling electric car into pickup trucks market which is dominated by Ford Motor Co’s F 150, Models of General Motors Co, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV. The production of this truck is expected to begin in the late 2021.The pickup shifts tesla more towards SUVs and trucks.

Ford and GM are also working to challenge tesla directly with new offerings like Ford Mustang Mack E electric SUV as well as electric pickups.

In the near term demand for full-size electric pickup truck may not be huge. However, HIS market an Industry Tracking firm estimates that electric trucks segment both full and, mid-sized model wil it.
